Purpleheart or amaranth is a species from Central and South America. The tall size tree, grows at altitude in the rain forest on soils rich in iron and minerals.

The grain is straight and regular, its texture is homogeneous and hard. It turns purple in sunlight. Highly reactive to ultraviolet, fresh wood initially light brown has an intense fluorescence that fades quickly as it changes color.
